Jacques-Louis David - “The Death of Marat”

David’s ‘The Death of Marat’ is a political painting, but it does not scream for attention. It is precisely the silence that makes it so haunting. Marat lies slumped in the bath, the letter still in his hand, his body set in stark contrast against the dark, almost empty background. Jacques-Louis David, the great painter of French Classicism and at the same time closely associated with the Revolution, does not turn the murdered journalist into a chaotic scene, but rather into a rigorously composed icon. Everything superfluous has been omitted: space, noise, the crowd. What remains are the body, light, writing and death.
The reproduction measures 53 × 70 cm and is executed on Leonardo (Satin) canvas. The satin-finished surface brings out the clear light-dark contrasts, the calm modelling and the muted colour tones in a balanced way. The motif is mounted on a stretcher frame and continues in a mirrored pattern along the sides, so that the edges of the picture appear seamless.
The Baroque decorative frame “Natascha” in gold with a red-rubbed finish gives the work a warm, historic setting. Measuring 41 mm in width and 33 mm in height, it makes a striking impression without detracting from the austerity of the composition. A serrated hanging mechanism completes the design.
