The girl with the pearl earring was created in 1665 and painted by the artist Jan Vermeer. The person in the picture looks directly at the viewer and keeps his mouth slightly open. However, it is not known who the girl is on the painting. In 2001, a novel titled "The Girl with the Pearl Earring" by Tracy Chevalier was published. This one deals with the question of who the person is in the picture and tells a fictional story about the maid Griet, who sits for the picture model. The book was filmed in 2003 by British film director Peter Webber. Scarlett Johansson is the girl in the painting, and Colin Firth is Jan Vermeer, the painter of the painting. The film received several awards and was nominated for three Oscars.
