John Francis Rigaud - “Portrait of Horatio Nelson (1758-1805)”

Rigaud’s portrait of Horatio Nelson does not depict an anonymous hero, but a figure with a clear demeanour and a public role. His gaze is focused, his uniform meticulously rendered; every detail points to his rank, service and self-image. John Francis Rigaud, who worked as a portrait and history painter in the 18th century, knew how to combine representative dignity with personal presence. In Nelson’s case, the later legend is also a factor: the British admiral became a historical figure whose portrait invariably evokes glory, war and remembrance.
The reproduction measures 38 × 47 cm and is executed on Leonardo (satin) canvas. The satin finish beautifully highlights the subtle transitions in the face, the darker tones of the clothing and the lighter accents of the uniform. The image is mounted on a stretcher frame and extended in a mirrored pattern at the sides, so that the edges of the picture appear seamless.
The classic ‘Elena’ gold frame frames the portrait in a calm and dignified manner. With a width of 28 mm and a height of 20 mm, it remains clearly proportioned. A pegged scalloped hanging system completes the design.
