The capital of the republic of the same name was not only an important trading post, but next to Florence also the most important center for science and culture, when Europe left the Middle Ages behind and embarked on modern times. So it is hardly surprising that a talented son of this extraordinary metropolis, Giovanni Antonio Canal (aka Canaletto), wanted to capture the beauty of his hometown in a variety of paintings. Among the many elaborate, almost photorealistic images of Canaletto, the portrait of the entrance of the Grand Canal is one of the most impressive and liveliest.
