So it is hardly surprising that a talented son of this extraordinary metropolis, Giovanni Antonio Canal (aka Canaletto), wanted to capture the beauty of his hometown in a variety of paintings. Among the many elaborate, almost photorealistic images of Canaletto, the portrait of the entrance of the Grand Canal is one of the most impressive and liveliest.
