Giovanni Antonio Canal

    October 7, 1697   -   April 19, 1768
Rococo   •   Wikipedia: Giovanni Antonio Canal

Giovanni Antonio Canal was a painter who became famous for his numerous city and bridge paintings. However, hardly anyone knew him under his civil name. He chose the artist name Canaletto for himself. Canaletto began painting at an early age and devoted himself to landscape paintings. He had learned this art from his father, who, among other things, created stage designs for plays. The art was thus in the blood of Giovanni Antonio Canal.

Canaletto's hometown was Venice, so he took advantage of the beauty of this city for some paintings and captured it in a painting. He also became famous for these numerous works of the Italian city. But not only simple paintings were painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal. He also dedicated himself to the Capricci. This is a special form of painting. Here, the respective paintings are reproduced and designed in great detail. In order to be able to realize this form of painting, great precision was required. Giovanni Antonio Canal had a nephew, Bernardo Bellotto. He worked in a very similar way to his uncle, but with a trained eye, one could easily see who had created the painting in question. Canaletto used bright colors and tones, so his paintings looked much brighter and friendlier. His nephew, on the other hand, used dark paintings and dark colours.
Br/> Most of the time Giovanni Antonio Canal stayed in Venice or Italy and presented his paintings there. But that should not be all. The English consul Joseph Smith became aware of Canaletto. He had a great interest in art from all over the world and supported several artists of his time. He brought Canaletto and his works to England, to the capital London. There Canal spent some years and dedicated himself to painting. During this time, some famous works were created, for example Windsor Castle. In England Canaletto experienced much more lightness than in his home town. This was also reflected in his works. The paintings made there seemed to be much brighter and friendlier. Giovanni Antonio Canal spent the last time of his life again in Venice. But here he did not seem to be happy. The once bright and colourful paintings became gloomy. The artist expressed in his paintings what he felt deep inside before his death.
