Edmund Blair Leighton

    September 21, 1853   -   September 1, 1922
Romanticism   •   Wikipedia: Edmund Blair Leighton

The English painter Edmund Blair Leighton received early lessons from his father, who also painted art. Edmund was talented and deepened his skills at the Royal Academy Schools. The painter quickly developed a preference for paintings with historical themes. His preference for depicting historical themes brought the artist into the circle of the English Pre-Raphaelites. The periods chosen by Leighton often refer to the Middle Ages and the Regency period. His motifs lack the reference to nature in art and therefore the artist is more likely to be associated with Romanticism or Neoclassicism. For over forty years the artist's works enjoyed such popularity that they were exhibited at the Royal Academy. In his private life, the artist liked to surround himself with beautiful things and collected old musical instruments.

The Victorian bourgeoisie had only a vague idea of life at court. Life around the king and queen was transfigured with romance and imagined with dreamy illusions. Edmund Blair Leighton imagined his world at court and brought it masterfully to the screen. "The Knighthood" is one of his most famous works and seems taken from the mythical world of King Arthur. The painting shows Leighton's great painterly skill. The chain mail is painted with fine brush work and fine light accents make the painting shine. The nostalgic feeling for chivalry carries the popularity of the painter to this day.
