Claude Monet - “Étretat, Porte d’Aval: Fishing Boats Leaving the Harbour”

Monet’s view of Étrétat does not depict a tranquil, picture-postcard coastline. The boats are about to set sail, the sea is in motion, and the rock formation of the Porte d’Aval stands behind them like a bright, massive counterpoint. Monet returned time and again to the Normandy coast because the light, water and weather there were never the same. It was precisely this changeability that interested him: not the exact description of the place, but the moment in which wind, spray, sails and rock create a tension of their own.
The reproduction measures 65 × 48 cm and is executed on Leonardo (satin) canvas. The satin-finished surface brings out the light coastal tones, the rippling water and the loose brushwork in a balanced way. The motif is mounted on a stretcher frame and framed in black at the sides, ensuring the picture area remains clearly defined.
The classic ‘Nunzia’ frame in black provides a striking finish to the light coastal motif. Measuring 49 mm in width and 31 mm in height, it makes a striking impression without detracting from the openness of the seascape. A pegged, serrated hanging system completes the design.
