Pether’s ‘Moonlight Scene, Southampton’ draws its life from that moment when the night is not yet completely dark. Moonlight lies over the water and the shore, lifting individual shapes out of the shadows and revealing the town or coastline only as far as the mood allows. Sebastian Pether was particularly renowned for such nocturnal landscapes. He did not paint in bright daylight, but rather in transitions: reflections, mist, clouds and that quiet luminosity which makes a scene appear both real and ethereal.
The reproduction measures 60 × 48 cm and is executed on Raphael (Matt) canvas. The matt surface enhances the subdued tones and soft gradations of the nocturnal motif. The picture is mounted on a stretcher frame and framed in white on the sides; in addition, a 3 cm wide white border frames the image in a calm manner.
The classic ‘Lychorida’ frame combines black with a hollow light brown and a fine gold edge. Measuring 45 mm in width and 36 mm in height, it lends the dark composition a warm, composed depth. A screw-mounted serrated hanging mechanism completes the design.
