The Austrian painter Egon Schiele (1890-1918) was an outstanding representative of Expressionism. Schiele was convinced that sex was the driving force of any existence. He regarded it as an engine for the cultural development of the Western world. Thus, even the naked or sparsely clad depiction of man is the central theme in Egon Schiele's works. "The seated woman with a raised knee" is a splendid example of this. Her gestures are provocative and provocative, the gaze reveals her sexual desires even more than the irritating, sparse clothing. Nevertheless, a contradiction is recognizable. Although the woman opens her legs wide (the door to lust), her right arm forms a kind of barrier. This may indicate an inhibition threshold, which she or her counterpart has yet to overcome in order to achieve full satisfaction.
