With his realistic painting »The older sister, reduction« William Adolphe Bouguerau has created a masterpiece that draws everyone's attention. The exciting color scheme directs the viewer's gaze directly to the female figure holding her little brother in her arms. The background of the photorealistic scene, painted in 1864, is dark and somewhat shaded. The lower part of the nurse's clothes is also dark, in order to direct the viewer's gaze to the face of the sister and her brother. The skin shimmers in bright colors - as does the blouse worn by the older sister. The two figures are located in the center of the picture and look directly at the picture viewer. The look of the two figures is intense - which is underlined by the color design, the head posture and the central arrangement of the figures. The background is darkened up and down to intensify the central perspective of the painting.
Bouguerau is considered one of the masters of Classical Realism and is known for his natural and dynamic depictions of people. Today, the painting by the French painter belongs to the permanent collection of the Brooklyn Museum. The realism of the scene is emphasized by the arms of the figures and the shadow play in skin and clothing. The older sister's gaze looks intense, as her hair is dark and seems to merge with the background. As a result, her face is particularly in the foreground and her eyes are very beautiful. The little brother also looks at the viewer and clings protectively to his sister. The head is shown in three-quarter profile, which makes the look of the boy almost more haunting than that of the sister. The little boy holds a chain in his hand, which seems to belong to the sister.
