The picture shows a "biblical" scene from the book Judith. The book does not exist in many Bible translations, as it is mainly viewed by Catholics and Orthodox as belonging to the Bible. It describes the following story: A hostile army was on its way to Jerusalem and the young and beautiful widow Judith went to the enemy camp, where she was arrested and invited to a meal by the commander Holofernes. Judith took the opportunity when her host was drunk and hit his head off. Under the pretext of praying outside the camp, Judith then returned from the enemy guards to her city. Caravaggio's favorite model Fillide Melandroni posed for the figure of Judith. At that time there were no female models and the artists had their wives posing, but Caravaggio was not married. Therefore, he simply painted a city-known prostitute - which of course was a scandal.
