Frederic Church painted in the picture Cotopaxi an active volcano in Ecuador. The tiny foreground figures point to the insignificance of humans compared to the surrounding natural wonders: the volcano, the waterfall and the tropical foliage. Between 1850 and 1875, Church is one of the most influential American artists. As a teenager, he studied with Thomas Cole , whose depictions of the Sicilian volcano Etna could have been the inspiration for Cotopaxi. The meaning of the picture is interpreted as a juxtaposition. The volcano in the background is a sign of destruction and the palm tree symbolizes the Garden of Eden. In addition, the artist's paintings are like documents from distant, exotic places in the era before photography and modern travel.
