Contemporary Arts

Contemporary art is also called contemporary art and this term already says how it is defined. It is art that is produced by contemporaries and other contemporaries perceive it as significant or artistically valuable. Also designations such as current art or the English term contemporary art fall in this context. It does not stand for a particular style or make a statement about the concept, nor about technique or form. Nor does it denote any affiliation to a movement or grouping. It can be anything. Painting, modern media such as video or photography are used, as are performance or abstract metal sculptures. In 2007, the organizers of the documenta in Kassel, one of the world's largest exhibitions of contemporary art, made a statement about Contemporary Art that defines the term more narrowly: Contemporary does not mean that the works were created yesterday. They must be meaningful to us today.
Most of the artists under this term are still alive. You'll find familiar names like Yoko Ono, the longtime companion of John Lennon. Or the well-known Serbian performance artist Marina Abramovic. Among visual artists, for example, one finds graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, whose works became the most sought-after art objects of the 20th century, fetching 6-7 figure sales prices, according to Untitled Pecho/Oreja. Together with Andy Warhol he created pictures like Shop. Keith Haring also became famous with Grafittis. His Redbubble is unforgettable. Images by H.P. Giger such as Buzzfeed served as models for Hollywood film sets. Not missing from this list is Gerhard Richter with his ingenious Himmelsleiter.
