Carl Donner

Watercolour painting is the epitome of British painting. In no other country has painting with watercolours a similarly high significance in art. Throughout the ages, artists have refined the technique to perfection. Painting with watercolours was appreciated by the first landscape painters who made their works in nature. The colour pigments were transported in small pots and dissolved with water on site. Painting and drying were rapid and, apart from a few glaze brushes, all the painter needed was a little paper. The great names of British painting, such as Turner and Constable preferred to translate their impressions with the translucent colours. Carl Donner is a contemporary artist who continues the tradition of watercolour painters. The first fleeting impression of his paintings makes it difficult to classify them into an era. Carl Donner specialized in the depiction of wildlife. They are exceptionally detailed depictions of British wildlife, often seen in their natural habitat.

There are few people who can escape depictions of animals. Animal painting is a part of representational painting and has accompanied art historical eras, since the first cave paintings. Every pictorial form is subject to social change and with contemporary art painters often use their possibilities to draw attention to the sensitive habitats in nature. Carl Donner's work follows British traditions. The wild birds in the meadows and woods create an image in the mind's eye and evoke associations. The painter exploring the green plains of the island with his tools. The quiet observer, wearing a dark green weather jacket and solid footwear, waiting for that one moment when the birdlife reveals itself. Carl Donner observes nature through binoculars. The impressions he gathers, he later puts on paper an excellent choice of colors. The birds seem lifelike in their depiction and in their movements. Donner shows snapshots that a camera could not capture more precisely. How great the artist's room for interpretation is in the realization remains the painter's secret.

About the biography of the painter there are only a few key points that the artist provides of himself. His artistic career as a professional painter began in 1974. The artist has his center of life in Norfolk on the east coast of Great Britain. It is probably in this landscape that the painter finds his inspiration. He is probably a nature lover whose character is marked by the necessary calm and patience it takes to observe animals. Carl Donner simply paints beautiful art. He reports, not without pride, of exhibitions of his paintings where buyers sneak in and purchase his paintings before the opening.
