The Sophia picture frame is finished in a soft white-grey, through which the fine grain of the maple veneer still shows through subtly. It is precisely this understated finish that we like so much: it is reminiscent of light-coloured wood that has been bathed in the soft light of a Salzburg room for years, without pretending to have a historic patina. The matt finish absorbs harsh reflections and changes subtly with the daylight, at times appearing almost white, then light grey and warm again. Measuring 20 mm in width and 20 mm in height, the frame is slender yet spatially defined. The profile is linear in design: a flat visible edge lies above the upright body and protrudes slightly at the edge of the picture. This creates a subtle shadow line on the inside that frames the subject without decoratively encircling it. This understated profile follows in the tradition of modern gallery and exhibition frames, which have been particularly prized for prints, photography and works on paper. We are happy to recommend Sophia for minimalist architectural drawings or delicate botanical prints. The frame looks at its best when the artwork features open spaces and calm areas of colour. In our view, it is a wonderful choice for light-filled rooms where wood, linen and muted wall colours complement one another.
