| What sort of picture is it designed for With Junia, the first thing that springs to mind is a family portrait in warm sepia tones, intended to take pride of place on the wall. Its light champagne shade lends a gentle golden sheen without detracting from the picture. The narrow solid-wood moulding has a delicately curved front: from the raised outer edge, it slopes down in a shallow cove moulding towards the narrow inner edge. This recess gently guides the eye towards the subject. Junia thus follows in the tradition of concave frames, whose inward-curving shape creates a sense of space around the painting. The dark, similarly recessed outer edge also gives it a clear outline when viewed from the side. We particularly like the fine lines of the brushed finish. In the light, light reflections alternate with darker streaks; small brown speckles and the subtle patina bring the surface to life. The outer edge reveals a slightly warmer, brownish gold tone. We’d also happily recommend Junia for a delicate landscape watercolour featuring sand-coloured paths and a light sky. It looks its best when the painting features soft colour tones and its fine texture is given space to stand out. |
