| This six-centimetre-wide wooden frame is characterised by a subtle, deep dark-brown finish. Fine reddish-brown traces of the wood remain visible beneath the stain and stand out particularly well when viewed in side light. The sheen is understated: light reflections glide gently across the profile, whilst the recess appears almost black. The solid wood lends the wide moulding a compelling physical presence. We particularly like the carefully graded shape. From the narrow inner rebate, the profile rises outwards in a wide, concave groove. There it ends in a softly rounded bead. This sequence of a narrow picture edge, deep groove and raised outer edge channels the gaze like a funnel towards the image and lends it spatial depth without surrounding it with ornamentation. The shape is reminiscent of dark-framed gallery frames from the Dutch Baroque period. In the 17th century, such understated grooved profiles were frequently used for portraits, still lifes and landscapes where the play of light was not to be overshadowed by gold decoration. We particularly recommend this frame for a delicately lit still life or a portrait with a dark background. It looks its best with pictures that feature strong light-and-shadow contrasts or warm earth tones. |
