Everyday scenes and work

The style of painting everyday scenes is also called genre painting or portraits of manners, whose origin can be found in antiquity - on vases and frescoes from Pompeii.

Typical scenes and actions from the world of work and life can be found in painting in all eras since then and give interesting insights into social conditions and coexistence in the respective time. As cultural-historical testimonies of the life and everyday life of the people in their typical environment, the works of art allow the viewer to dive into the worlds of past times and to discover this living world in many small details.
In addition to the documentary representation of everyday life, however, a deeper statement is often hidden in many snapshots, which in their respective visual language has a narrative character. Moral interpretations of the respective way of life can be found here as well as pictorially depicted proverbs and plays. The doctrinal-moralizing style of the everyday scenes thus also testifies to the cultural imprint of the time and provides interesting information about social norms and customs of the milieus.

Already in the 16th century old masters created the typical peasant and family scenes in which often especially in negative examples of the immoralities of the lower classes - such as drunkenness or quarrels were depicted. In later eras, this mode of representation then gave way to scenes of the upper middle classes and revealed their deeper meaning only to the attentive and knowledgeable viewer.

We hope you enjoy browsing our collection of the highest quality art prints of the most exciting scenes of everyday and working life from different eras of painting.
