English School refers to the art created in the period between 1750 and 1850 by artists from the region of origin, England. One can recognize the painting style which was modern at that time as well as the predominant pictorial themes.
Nevertheless, the works of the English School are as varied as its artists and therefore very versatile and extremely interesting. They show plans, animals, everyday scenes, cities, portraits, landscape painting, detail drawings, comics and much more. The techniques are as varied as the motifs: from engravings to pencil drawings to oil paintings, almost everything is included.
William Turner (1775-1851) was part of the English School and in his works, which were created over several decades, one can easily observe the development of the painting style and the influences on the style. Other well-known personalities of the English School are for example the artists Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) and Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792). They and many other English artists contribute to the versatility of the English School and thus also determine the style of this epoch.
The term English School, unlike in French or Spanish, is not translated into German. In Europe one also speaks of Academic Art or Academism.
