Gothic Art

Gold ground on wood, coloured glass in lead, body colour on parchment: the painting of the Gothic age is bound to its supports, and each of them served the same purpose, the making present of salvation. In Siena a panel could hold the rank of an affair of state: when Duccio di Buoninsegna completed his Maestà in 1311, the altarpiece was carried through the city into the cathedral in solemn procession.

Siena remained a centre of this art. Simone Martini painted his Annunciation on radiant gold ground in 1333, Ambrogio Lorenzetti painted in 1338/39 in the town hall of Siena his fresco of the Effects of Good Government, one of the first great secular picture programmes, and Gentile da Fabriano brought the courtly splendour of International Gothic onto the panel in Florence in 1423 with his Adoration of the Magi.

For princes the most precious form arose in the small. Pol de Limbourg and his brothers painted between about 1412 and 1416 the Très Riches Heures of the Duke of Berry, probably the most precious book of hours of the Middle Ages, a private prayer book for the fixed hours of the day. The Parisian Boucicaut Master was already organising manuscript illumination as a workshop with divided labour, Jean Fouquet joined French court art to the Italian conception of space after mid-century. At the threshold of the modern age stands, finally, Michael Pacher, whose altarpiece of St Wolfgang in the Salzkammergut, completed in 1481, unites Gothic shrine and new depth of space in one work.
