Giovanni Segantini - “The Punishment of Lust”
Art reproduction on canvas
In Segantini’s “The Punishment of Lust”, a symbolist winter landscape unfolds, creating an effect that is both tranquil and haunting. Between bare, snow-covered trees, female figures appear, seeming to hang weightlessly in space - captured in a frozen, almost timeless moment. Cool light lies over the scene, tracing subtle gradations in the snow and sky, whilst the figures’ bodies remain integrated into the landscape yet simultaneously stand out from it. Here, Segantini combines nature and allegory to create an image of desire, guilt and consequence; the calm, clear composition reinforces the quiet intensity of the depiction.
In the 68 × 39 cm format, the composition remains balanced and clearly structured, with an emphasised horizontality that lends the scene a sense of expansiveness and tranquillity. The “Leonardo” canvas precisely captures the fine textures and gentle colour gradients of the original; its satin-finished surface reveals a subtle, uniform weave in close-up.
The canvas is stretched over a stretcher frame, with the motif mirrored at the sides and continuing onto the edges. This creates a continuous, unobtrusive finish without an additional frame, keeping the effect of the scene open and minimalist. The artwork is hung using a serrated hanger attached to the back, which allows for simple and secure mounting.
