Blue-and-yellow Macaw

Blue-and-yellow Macaw - Edward Lear

A border approximately three centimetres wide sets the macaw free against the light background and lends the zoological journal a sense of tranquillity reminiscent of a classical natural history illustration. The line of sight follows the branch from the left to the bird’s head; from there, the long tail drops almost vertically downwards. A rich blue covers the back, wings and crown, whilst yellow runs through the breast and tail feathers. In between, the black beak and the marked facial features provide clear accents. Leaves and twigs are merely hinted at in places, so that the bird, despite its vibrant colours, does not disrupt the objective order. I find it particularly beautiful how much presence it gains simply through colour and posture: its body leans forward, its claws clasp the branch, and its eye gazes alertly to the side. Edward Lear, a 19th-century British artist and writer, combines precise observation of nature with a palpable interest in the individual animal in his bird studies. Here, too, the depiction remains precise without becoming cold.

When hung, it becomes clear how well the narrow portrait format of 26 x 41 centimetres complements the tail and the bird’s posture. Leonardo, the satin-finished canvas, renders the lines clearly and allows the blue and yellow to stand out richly; stretched over the stretcher frame, the motif continues with mirrored image edges on the sides. There is no passe-partout or glass to separate the picture from its surroundings - instead, the light-coloured border within the picture area acts as a frame for ‘Sinead’ with its oak veneer. It is precisely this colour relationship that is crucial during the creation process: The light brown of the wood is close to the tones of the branch, without blending into them. This creates a second, slightly warmer outline around the sheet. Set against the deep blue, the oak brown appears almost subdued; next to the yellow, it appears significantly livelier. My gaze lingers on the left-hand side of the picture: there, the brown frame, the grey-beige border and the narrow yellow tail feathers appear in succession. This gradation prevents the strong colours from ending abruptly against the wall.

The objective calm of the bird study is preserved, yet the macaw possesses sufficient chromatic weight to immediately define the space. The contrast between the vibrant blue-yellow and the tranquil oak brown strikes me as perfectly balanced.
