I would like to reduce the number of curves to a minimum ... and still achieve a certain effect ... that I didn't realise I was looking for.
A three-dimensional Lissajous figure, described by sin(3t)/sin(4t)/sin(5t). Projected onto the three coordinate planes, we get the more familiar 2D Lissajous figures - three combinations of two of these functions, like sin(3t)/sin(4t).
I still remember seeing these on the screen of an analogue oscilloscope in physics class - glowing greenish lines on a dark screen generated by electron beams.
