Contemporary Arts

This picture was inspired by a Youtube video I happened to see. In this video, someone is drawing a Zentangle pattern in a sketchbook using fineliners in two to three shades of red and black. I was fascinated by how one can create such a beautiful and complex looking image with so few materials and simple, basic drawing elements, and without having to create elaborate sketches beforehand. Zentangle drawing is somewhat similar to painting mandalas. You string together simple geometric shapes and lines that create patterns. Only, unlike painting mandalas, Zentangle drawing is purposeless and you don't have the goal of creating a circle or other defined results. The process for this painting was similar. I started painting patterns with acrylic markers in shades of blue without knowing where it might lead. In the end I found that the resulting blue pattern carpet could also symbolize a woman's hair and so I added a woman's face using graphite pencils. Overall, the image looks very cheerful to me. The blue colors in the pattern game remind me of the light reflections in a sea or in a moving river or lake. The look of the woman affects me as if she is looking confidently, cheerfully and determinedly into the future. The original image was created on A3 and to ensure a smooth, pixel-free representation of the details, I would recommend a maximum format of A1 (60 x 84 cm) (downward the margin is open).
