Lewis Wickes Hine is one of the most important social documentary photographers of the 19th century. He used the power of his photos to uncover the injustices that prevailed in the underclass and thus to make a political difference. He was particularly keen to point out the terrible consequences of child labor. With the image "Self-Portrait with Newsboy", he shows, by the size of the newspaper measured against the boy, the far too great demands on these children. By involving himself, Hine expresses his empathy for the subject.
