It is clear from Jules Bastien-Lepage's pictures that the French artist, born in 1848, comes from a peasant family. His relationship to the field work is relaxed and knowledgeable as the painting "October" shows. The earthy-brown potato field takes up a large part of the picture, with the view going from the bottom up, just like the depicted nature. In the foreground of the picture two young women can be seen at work. The concentration is directed to the handsome farmer's wife, who tries to fill potatoes with a fresh and concentrated expression in a large sack. Behind her, in the shade, another woman is lying on the ground collecting potatoes from the field into her basket. This life with "Mother Nature" is simple, busy, satisfying. The artist has masterfully captured the movement of the figures and underscores the dynamics with smaller figures in the distance. The sky torn at the top of the picture also underlines the scenery.
