The scene in the painting "Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose" by John Singer Sargent is set in a garden in the village of Cotswolds on Broadway, where the artist lived in 1885. It was very important to capture the atmosphere, but the evening light was exactly what he wanted for a few minutes every day. For two years, for example, he had his models set up every night, adjusting his brush and palette "in anticipation of the few moments when he could paint the mauve light of dawn". Sargent kept scraping off the previous evening's work to correct it the following evening, as well as separating 60 centimeters from the canvas "to concentrate the composition." But when you look at the image, you realize that the effort was really worth it, the colors reflect the mood of the dusk perfectly.
