The light of the full moon breaks through a loose cloud cover and illuminates the seascape almost daylight. Georg Schmitz (1851 to 1917) presents the viewer the small island Neuwerk, as the crow flies about 15 kilometers from Cuxhaven, as a romantic place in the style of a Caspar David Friedrich. The moonlight is reflected in the little moving sea water, clearly visible, but still at a considerable distance, the lighthouse of Neuwerk sends out its light in the background. On the right half of the picture, approximately in the middle of the painting, are three sailing ships on the silt - the sea around Neuwerk is known for its enormous tidal range. No one is to be seen, but a little smoke rises from the cabin of the left ship, whose broad side the painter has depicted. Schmitz uses the full moon to create a dreamlike atmosphere. Because the brightness does not quite fit the night, at the same time knows the image viewer, that there are exactly those full moon nights, in which the world is bathed in a very strange light. The composition of the picture is very balanced, it has an enormous depth, but by no means threatening. In this landscape, man may feel more secure than exposed to the threatening forces of the sea.
