Victorian Art

Victorian art shaped the reign of Queen Victoria in England from 1837 to 1901. The Pre-Raphaelites under Dante Gabriel Rossetti opposed the clear, cool depictions of the classicism that had prevailed until then: he and his fellow campaigners William Holman Hunt, Edward Burne-Jones and John Everett Millais oriented themselves on the style of the Middle Ages and Renaissance and introduced the naturalistic depiction of people and landscapes that was common at the time into their works. Popular motifs depicted ancient and religious scenes as well as mythical figures, and portraiture was also very important.

In addition to the Pre-Raphaelites, other styles influenced the art of the Victorian age: Frederic Leighton, whose best-known paintings depict young women in ancient and biblical scenes, considered himself a representative of Neoclassicism. Among the representatives of Academic Realism was Lawrence Alma-Tadema, who devoted himself mainly to history painting. Pre-Raphaelite, Classicist, and Impressionist influences can be found in the paintings of John William Waterhouse.

Among the most famous works of the Victorian era are "Beata Beatrix" created by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, "The Light of the World" by William Holman Hunt and "Ophelia" by John Everett Millais. With the emergence of classical modernism at the beginning of the 20th century, Victorian art receded into the background; it was not until the 1970s that it experienced an art historical revival.
