| This four-centimetre-wide frame combines solid wood with an antique-finished silver surface. We particularly like the way the fine, longitudinal marks catch the light: lighter areas shimmer subtly, whilst darker speckles and lines lend depth to the surface. The result is not a reflective metallic sheen, but a vibrant, slightly aged silver finish. The profile is clearly defined. A wide, almost flat front surface rests over a sturdier, vertical wooden body and protrudes slightly on the picture side. This small step frames the subject neatly and creates a narrow shadow edge without distracting the eye from the picture. The darkened inner edge further emphasises this transition. Such flat moulding profiles follow the tradition of understated gallery and artist’s frames, which were particularly prized for prints, photographs and modern paintings from the late 19th century onwards and throughout the 20th century. Their purpose was less ornamental decoration than a calm, visual boundary. We are happy to recommend this frame for cool, atmospheric landscapes or black-and-white photographs. Delicate drawings also look particularly striking in it. It looks at its best when the subject offers a sense of calm and clear areas against which the mottled silver tone can stand out. |
