This six-centimetre-wide wooden frame combines a historic cove moulding with the clean lines of early modernism. Its profile rises from the narrow inner edge in a deep, gently curved groove to the raised outer edge. This form originates from architecture and was adopted into frame design in the 19th century. The understated design, devoid of ornamentation, is reminiscent of the reform movements around 1900, Art Nouveau and the Secession. In those movements, broad, understated profiles were used to frame landscapes, portraits and graphic works in particular, without overwhelming their composition with decoration. The profile is made of solid wood. Its silver-coloured surface has a fine longitudinal grain and is enlivened by black shading and small dark speckles. In the light, the centre of the moulding brightens softly, whilst the outer edge remains darker. This creates a sense of spatial depth, and the viewer’s gaze is gently guided towards the image. The silver does not appear reflective, but rather subdued and slightly warm. We particularly recommend this frame for atmospheric landscapes or understated portraits from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It looks its best in our collection when the picture features cool grey tones, night-time colours or clear light-dark contrasts.
