| This white wooden frame derives its character from its calm, precise geometry. The four-centimetre-wide front edge has a smooth, matt finish. This prevents harsh reflections: incoming light is diffused softly across the surface, whilst the cleanly cut mitre joints remain visible. The profile is constructed as a flat, rectangular strip. Its upper surface protrudes slightly beyond the lower rebate at the edge of the picture. This small step casts a subtle shadow line on the inside and gently separates the artwork from the frame. This provides support for the artwork without constraining it through ornamentation or pronounced profile variations. The straight surfaces and the deliberate absence of decoration are reminiscent of the functional framing style of classical modernism and the design principles of the Bauhaus. Such understated mouldings were particularly valued where prints, photography and abstract compositions were intended to speak for themselves. We are happy to recommend this frame for constructive works such as compositions by Piet Mondrian or for minimalist black-and-white photography. It looks its best when the artwork features clear lines, light-coloured areas or bold blocks of colour. We consider it a good choice for rooms where the artwork is allowed to make a calm and focused impression. |
