Berühmt wurde der englische Maler Thomas Rowlandson für seine gesellschaftskritischen Karikaturen. Seine erotischen, teilweise sogar pornographischen Bilder waren stark von den Gemälden des französischen Rokoko beeinflusst.
Der Sohn eines angesehenen Kaufmanns wurde in London geboren, wo er später an der Königlichen Kunstakademie studierte, gefolgt von einigen Studiengängen in Paris. Er begann mit Portraits und Landschaftsbildern, doch der Radierer James Gillray, sowie Henry William Bunbury inspirierten ihn zur Karikaturmalerei, was ihm schließlich Beachtung und Erfolg einbrachte, so 1784 die Bilder von Vauxhall Gardens. Der Verleger Rudolph Ackermann veröffentlichte in seinem Poetical Magazine eine Vielzahl kolorierter Aquatinblätter Rowlandsons, was auf einem speziellen Verfahren künstlerischer Druckgrafik beruht, bei der mit Flächenätzung gearbeitet wird. Bücher von Henry Fielding, Tobias Smolett, Laurence Sterne oder Oliver Goldsmith wurden mit Zeichnungen von Thomas Rowlandson illustriert. Englische Journale verbreiteten seine Karikaturen.
Ebenso lasterhaft wie seine Bilder schien auch sein Lebenswandel zu sein. Er hegte eine große Leidenschaft zu Wetten und Spielen, was ihn immer wieder in Geldnot brachte. Trotzdem erreichte er ein Lebensalter von 71 Jahren. Er starb in seinem Geburtsort London. Werke wie The Toss off, poem und illustrations oder The Adulturers discovered finden heute noch Liebhaber genauso wie Empörung.
