The Russian artist Nikolai von Astudin found his artistic home in the enchanting landscapes of the Rhine and the Eifel region. Born in the pulsating metropolis of Moscow on July 9, 1847, he exchanged the urban streets for the picturesque splendor of the German heartland. Under the pseudonym Emil Winter, Astudin created a series of remarkable landscape paintings that grace our collection of fine art prints. The education of Astudin, the son of an officer, began in Saint Petersburg. He discovered his extraordinary talent under the careful guidance of the renowned landscape painter Armand Theophile Cassagne in Paris. His passion for art led him on exploratory trips through Finland, the Alps, and Italy before taking the path to Berlin in 1875. He exhibited his work in Berlin in 1876 and 1877 and later moved to Munich and Kassel before laying down his brush in Bonn and finally Oberlahnstein, where he lived and worked until his death on August 8, 1925.
In the heart of the Eifel romanticism and with the picturesque backdrop of the Rhine, Astudin found his artistic voice. He passionately portrayed the Rhenish landscape, and his depictions of the 1898 Rhine Bridge, Godesburg Castle, and especially Lahneck Castle speak volumes about his love for this stretch of land. Our exquisite fine art prints of these works reflect Astudin's immense talent and deep connection to nature. His artwork not only lived in galleries and private collections, but also found its way onto postcards that were available along the Rhine River from Mainz to Cologne until the 1970s. In addition, his artistic print leporellos of the course of the Rhine, which he published under the inconspicuous name Emil Winter, further contributed to the fame of his art.
On September 18, 2005, eight decades after Astudin's death, the city of Lahnstein honored his invaluable contributions to the art world with a retrospective exhibition. Today, his vibrant art graces the walls of art lovers worldwide in the form of art prints, and his legacy lives on in every line and brushstroke.
