Das Zeitalter des John Sell Cotman war die Ära der großen englischen Aquarelllisten. Schon in jungen Jahren studierte der Künstler aus gut situierten Verhältnissen die Grundlagen der Aquarellmalerei. Es zog die Künstler hinaus in die Natur seiner Heimat und vor Ort wurden die durchscheinenden Landschaftsmalereien mit ihren fließenden Übergängen geschaffen. Cotman war nicht ausschließlich Künstler, er war zeit seines Lebens gleichermaßen Lehrer und entwickelte die romantische Landschaftsdarstellung mit ihren Lichtreflexen weiter.

Anders als Cotmans Kollegen Joseph Mallord William Turner und Thomas Girtin arbeitete Cotman mit einem strengen Bildaufbau und der Abgrenzung von hellen und dunklen Flächen in seinen Arbeiten. Sein Werk "Die Greta Brücke" zeigt sehr deutlich Ansätze des später populären Stils, der an japanische Farbholzschnitte erinnert. Der Fluss Greta ist zwischen 1803 und 1805 ein widerkehrendes Thema in Cotmans Werken. Bei regelmäßigen Sommeraufenthalten studiert er den Fluss und entwickelt eine bis dahin neue Darstellungsweise.

Thematisch wählte er architektonisch interessante Gebäude des historischen Yorkshire. "Das Schloss an Tancarville" ist eine von Cotmans Radierungen, die eine große Detailtreue aufweist. John Sell Cotman hinterlässt ein Großes und von Schaffen geprägtes Werk. Der Künstler hat zu Lebzeiten regelmäßig in großen Häusern ausgestellt und künstlerische Anerkennung erfahren.
