In the heart of Paris, on November 24, 1763, began the remarkable story of Charles Meynier, a French painter whose work marked the era of the Napoleonic Wars. Born into the humble circumstances of a family of horse traders, Meynier overcame the expectations of his father, who wanted him to train as a tailor, and instead followed his heart into the world of art. He learned the basics of painting in a free drawing school before beginning an apprenticeship with the engraver Pierre Philippe Choffard. But his love for painting never left him, supported by his older brother Etienne Meynier, a successful actor of the Comédie-Française.
Etienne eventually financed his younger brother's apprenticeship in the studio of the renowned painter François André Vincent, who became Charles Meynier's teacher in 1782. Vincent enabled Meynier to enter the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. Nevertheless, Meynier continued to reside in his father's modest tenement, a testament to his determination and commitment to his art, despite the adversities of his personal environment. Meynier's talent and dedication were recognized in 1789 when he won second prize in the prestigious Prix de Rome competition. He later designed the reliefs for Paris' famous Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel, a testament to his remarkable skills. In 1816 he was elected to the prestigious Institut de France, where he occupied one of the newly created seats for the painting section of the Académie des Beaux-Arts.
Today, Meynier's works can be admired in famous art collections such as the Louvre in Paris, the Palace of Versailles and the Musée Magnin in Dijon.
