Naive Art

Naive was what the art world called painters who had never seen an academy, and for a long time it did not mean it as a compliment. That a recognised category grew out of it is above all the work of the German collector and dealer Wilhelm Uhde, who bought Henri Rousseau early and in 1928 exhibited self-taught painters in Paris under the title Painters of the Sacred Heart. Rousseau himself, a Paris customs official by main profession, exhibited from 1886 at the jury-free Salon des Indépendants; his famous jungle pictures followed from 1891. In 1908 the young avant-garde held a banquet for him that has since become legendary, half homage, half prank.

The genre knows many lives of this kind. Niko Pirosmani painted tavern signs and festive tables on black oilcloth in Georgia, Alfred Wallis began to paint as an old fisherman in the fishing town of St Ives in Cornwall and was discovered there by young artists in 1928. In America the Quaker preacher Edward Hicks created his Peaceable Kingdom of the animals in around sixty versions. Joshua Johnson worked around 1800 in Baltimore as one of the first African American professional portraitists, James Bard portrayed the steamboats of the Hudson. What connects these painters is not clumsiness but independence: pictorial solutions that owe nothing to any school.
