Fauvism

The term "Fauvism" goes back to a group of artists who were called "Fauves" (predators, beasts). The art critic Louis Vauxcelles was the originator of this evocative naming. The Fauves were a French avant-garde movement at the beginning of the 20th century that went against all conventions. It was led by Henri Matisse. Among the co-founders were André Derain and Albert Marquet. Breaking the rules was their program. They eluded all classification and discipline. Consequently, they also refused to be called "Fauves".

The Fauvists were technically influenced by Impressionism, but turned away even more decisively from realistic ambitions and took the principle of subjectivity to extremes. The aim was less to depict reality and more to express the inner life of the artist. In doing so, the artists made use of garish and colorful colors and employed them as they saw fit. The paintings of the neo-impressionist autodidact Paul Signac, characterized by their bright and luminous colors, inspired the savages in this respect. Fauvism meant experimenting not only with colors, but also with shapes.

The Fauvists caused quite a stir between 1905 and 1908 and had a lasting impact on 20th century art during this short period. The next great revolution that followed Fauvism was Cubism.
