Between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea, between medieval towns and endless forests, an art history unfolds that is as multi-layered as the country itself. Slovenian painting and graphic art are characterised by a constant search for identity - a reflection of the eventful history between the Habsburg monarchy, Yugoslavian affiliation and the striving for independence. Life pulsates in the works of Slovenian artists: they tell of the rugged beauty of the Karst landscape, of the melancholy of the mists over Lake Bled, of the longing for freedom and the pride in one's own culture.



A watercolour by Ivana Kobilca, the grande dame of Slovenian painting, captures the scent of a summer afternoon on a terrace - light and shadow dance on the faces as if time stood still for a moment. Her works, often inspired by French Impressionism, show how open Slovenia was to European trends without losing its own signature style. In the 1980s, when Slovenia was still part of Yugoslavia, a subversive art scene emerged: artists such as Irwin and the Laibach group used collages, photomontages and screen printing to question political and social taboos. To this day, their works are a fascinating testimony to the courage to use art to push boundaries and rethink identity.
