Painting Frames "Wilhelmine" |

| The Wilhelmine frame has that subtle presence that we particularly value in a well-established collection: it brings together different works without upstaging them. The solid wood is finished in warm natural and dark brown tones. Its visible grain lends the slender profile – 30 mm wide and 19 mm high – a calm, homely depth. Between the subtly graded outer and inner edges lies a recessed ornamental moulding. Its recurring, geometrically arranged leaf motif is reminiscent of antique-style palmette friezes, as adopted from classical decoration into 19th-century frame design. Such narrow decorative profiles were particularly favoured for portraits, drawings and smaller landscapes, where the frame was intended to organise and accentuate the subject. The dark patina accumulates in the recesses, whilst aged gold and gold-coloured raised areas catch the light in specific places. This creates not a uniform sheen, but a lively interplay along the edge of the picture. We particularly recommend ‘Wilhelmine’ for a finely painted Biedermeier portrait or an atmospheric Romantic landscape. It looks at its best when warm brown tones, muted greens or individual golden highlights recur in the painting. In this way, it blends into the drawing room like a familiar piece from a private collection. |
