| This six-centimetre-wide wooden frame derives its character from its gentle concave moulding. The solid wooden profile curves gently outwards at the edges, sweeps inwards to form a broad, concave surface, and ends there in a narrow, slightly projecting edge. This shape follows in the tradition of historic moulded frames, whose purpose was to softly diffuse light and direct the viewer’s gaze towards the painting without ornamental distraction. Such profiles were frequently chosen for portraits, landscapes and prints. The antique white finish is not entirely uniform: fine dark speckles and delicate, longitudinal marks enliven the surface. Light dances across the curve, whilst the concave moulding remains calmly shaded. This gives the picture a clean yet welcoming frame. The inner rebate accommodates the artwork, glazing and backing board. For works on paper, we recommend acid-free mounting and a gap between the sheet and the glass. A sturdy hanging system, adapted to the total weight and ideally secured at two points, keeps the frame secure and straight. We find it particularly suited to light-coloured landscapes or subtly nuanced portraits. It looks at its best when the picture offers a sense of calm and space around its subjects. |
