The Julika picture frame combines a warm, dark red background with a brushed gold inner edge. Along the 30 mm wide profile, the red surface remains calm and clear, whilst subtle light-and-shade effects bring the light to life. The gold edge is slightly curved and slopes gently towards the picture’s edge. This creates a visual connection to the artwork without the frame, with its 24 mm profile height, appearing heavy. The profile is made of solid wood. Its shape is reminiscent of narrow variations of the Cassetta frame, in which a colour-painted outer panel and a gold visible edge clearly separated paintings from the surrounding space. Such frames were particularly common for portraits, religious depictions and smaller panel paintings. From a conservation perspective, we ensure that the artwork lies tension-free within the rebate when framing. For delicate prints, we recommend an acid-free backing board and, depending on the material, protective glass spaced away from the surface of the picture. Two appropriately positioned hanging points distribute the weight and help to keep the frame straight in the long term. We particularly recommend the ‘Julika’ frame for Renaissance portraits or floral still lifes featuring deep shades of red, brown and green. It looks at its best when the picture features individual warm highlights that gently complement the golden inner edge.
