| Estrid – grey-blue with a silvery sheen. When we pick up Estrid, the first thing that catches the eye is the surface: countless fine grooves run across the profile, with a grey-blue glaze in between, through which silver tones and, here and there, a warm rust-red shine through. It looks like brushed metal that has been in use for a long time. The cut edge at the cross-section reveals solid wood, grown in one piece, with no glued layers. The shape is a cove moulding: from the outer edge, the profile rises gently and then slopes downwards towards the picture in a soft cove, 47 mm wide and 35 mm high. This recessed groove is an old trick of frame-making – it collects shadows, draws the eye inwards and makes the picture appear to sit deeper. We recognise such mouldings from window reveals and wall panelling, before they became picture mouldings. We are happy to recommend Estrid for light-coloured watercolours, coastal landscapes or botanical drawings. Black-and-white photographs also benefit from its cool undertone. It looks at its best when the picture itself remains understated and does not compete for attention with many bold colours. |
