| Dorothee is no inconspicuous companion. Measuring 68 millimetres in width and 55 millimetres in height, this solid wood frame makes a visible statement, and that is precisely what makes it so appealing. Its antique ivory-coloured finish ranges from cream to off-white. The patinated, speckled surface features subtle red, grey-blue and golden accents, which do not gleam smoothly but instead catch the light in ever-changing ways. The tall back, gently curved outwards, lends depth to the profile. On the visible side is a broad relief panel across which leaves, blossoms and acanthus tendrils run in dense succession. Towards the centre, delicate mouldings cascade down to a warm golden ornamental edge that draws the eye back into the picture. This design is reminiscent of Baroque frames, whose sculptural plant forms provided portraits and religious paintings with an architectural transition to the richly decorated wall. For a contemporary work, ‘Dorothee’ is a deliberate choice, not a mere supporting role. We particularly recommend it for strictly composed abstract paintings or a serene portrait with large areas of colour. The contrast can bring the work into focus with astonishing clarity. It is shown to its best advantage when the picture possesses sufficient calm and scale. With intricate, delicate motifs, we would carefully consider whether the frame might not already be the dominant element. |
