Painting Frames "Annette" |

| There are frames that look as though they had already been hanging in a traditional Salzburg parlour before they came to us. Annette is one such frame. The dark brown outer wood has a warm brown undertone – mottled, uneven, with that slightly weathered texture that old furniture surfaces develop over decades. Towards the picture opening, the profile tapers into a narrow, brushed groove, and that is precisely where the antique gold sits: matt, with longitudinal stripes, and dark flecks in the recesses. The construction consists of a flat moulding with a raised outer edge, 30 mm wide and 24 mm high. This construction method originates from Baroque workshop practice: the dark edge frames the picture against the wall, whilst the gilded groove reflects light inwards and draws the eye to the subject. The cross-section reveals solid wood with a continuous, clearly defined grain. We are happy to recommend it for dark-toned Romantic landscapes or for still lifes by the Old Masters. It looks at its best when the picture itself features warm brown and gold tones. |
