Lucas Cranach the Younger was the youngest son of the artist Lucas Cranch des Älteren, who had taught him to paint and from whom he later took over the Cranach workshop. This was a print shop and an art enterprise that Lucas Cranach the Younger ran so successfully that it became popular throughout Europe and was known for its colourful paintings of the highest quality. However, he was not only a well-known artist and businessman, but also mayor of Wittenberg and father of nine children. His son Augustin also became an artist and then took over the workshop from him.
Lucas mostly painted portraits, often of very well-known personalities such as the reformers Martin Luther and Phillipp Melanchthon. Many of his paintings also show biblical scenes, which are very rich in figures and elaborate. Lucas Cranch signed his works with the family crest. On the coat of arms there is a serpent with wings and a golden ring with red ruby hanging from his mouth and wearing a red crown. His father depicted the snake with bat wings, but he changed it to bird wings. This way he could keep the family crest and still be different from his father.
Lucas Cranach the Younger is still one of the most important painters of the Renaissance, but although his works are even richer than those of his father, he still stands in his father's shadow.
