"Born near Paris, Jules Gervais Courtellemont spent his childhood in Algeria He became a globetrotter, always in search of something special and exotic. His photography drew him as far as the eastern Mediterranean, North Africa and on to Asia. He collected his works, the moment he had captured with his camera. A head full of dreams and two feet on the ground," is how a contemporary described the artist of light painting.
Courtellemnet worked with the technique of autochrome photography developed around 1900. Jules Gervais Courtellemont was the first artist to succeed in illustrating books by means of photography. During the First World War Jule returned to his birthplace. He became a reporter on the events of the war. His photographs were compositions, carefully arranged landscapes with symbolic motifs that expressed the horror of war. Thanks to their high quality and colouring, Courtellemont snapshots were highly appreciated even by those who had little interest in the war events.
To this day, his photographs of a devastated landscape during the First World War as well as a grave in France are testimonies of a contemporary witness to the destruction caused by the war. With the Porträt des Generals Henri-Philppe Pétain Courtellemont succeeded in creating a hitherto unique representation of colourfulness.
