Johann-Gottfried Auerbach

    October 28, 1697   -   August 5, 1753
Portrait painting   •   Wikipedia: Johann-Gottfried Auerbach

On October 28, 1697, in Mühlhausen/Thuringia, the firstborn of the Auerbachs, Johann Gottfried, opened a new chapter in the family history by asserting himself on the rocky path of art and ultimately scaling the high walls of the imperial court of Vienna. In the fascinating mosaic of 18th-century art, Auerbach, a talented painter of German origin, plays a remarkable role. His vivid portraits of Empress Maria Theresa, Emperor Francis I, and other members of the Habsburg dynasty won him considerable acclaim. Auerbach's masterful ability to capture the fine details of the human face on canvas not only impressed the nobility, but also led to his appointment as imperial court painter in 1735. Amidst the magnificent halls of the Vienna Hofburg, he produced such remarkable works as the portrait of Emperor Charles VI, which can still be admired today in the Imperial Gallery in Vienna. A special pearl of his œuvre is the monumental equestrian portrait of Prince Eugene of Savoy, which occupies a place of honor in the Museum of Military History in Vienna.

The intrigues of court painting took an extraordinary turn in 1728, when Emperor Charles VI ordered a large inventory of paintings and commissioned the famous Neapolitan painter Francesco Solimena to create a dedication painting. In this imposing Baroque painting, the imperial director of construction presents the inventory of his collection to the emperor. Surprisingly, the actual portrait of Emperor Charles VI and his director of construction was executed not by Solimena, but by Auerbach, whose precise portrait technique did justice to the courtly preference for ceremonial representation. Auerbach's considerable talent and artistic legacy are captured in the high quality art prints of his works, reproduced with great care and offered by our company. These art prints allow you to experience Auerbach's attention to detail and mastery in your own home and appreciate his contribution to 18th century art. Each art print is a tribute to Johann Gottfried Auerbach - an artist whose craftsmanship is revealed in every brushstroke and who knew how to portray the courtly figures of his time in an authentic yet stylized light.
