Gaston Bussiere

    April 24, 1862   -   October 29, 1928
Symbolism   •   Wikipedia: Gaston Bussiere

In the atmospheric expanses of the French town of Cuisery, the journey of the remarkable painter and illustrator Gaston Bussière began on April 24, 1862. His passionate artistic journey took him to the vibrant metropolis of Paris, leaving behind a rich legacy of artworks unlike the ordinary.

After an intensive education at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, Bussière received further training from the renowned painter Alexandre Cabanel in Paris. His art breathed the inspiration of his contemporaries, especially that of the mythical symbolism of Gustave Moreau. It was not the ordinary that Bussière captured on canvas, but the fantastic and legendary.

Through the eyes of Bussière we look at a world of French legends and Nordic myths. The tragic lovers Tristan and Isolde, the powerful wizard Merlin, the epic Song of Roland, and the seductive Valkyries all take shape in Bussière's work, often with an erotic nuance. Even Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Ophelia and Salomé emerge from obscurity and come alive through Bussière's masterful strokes.

Bussière, a sometime follower of Joséphin Péladan, also exhibited his works at the Salon de la Rose-Croix. His artistic output exemplifies the power of inspiration, reflected in the intricately crafted artworks that capture the vibrant energy of his paintings.

Gaston Bussière's life and work leave us with a wealth of artworks that transport us to a world of myths and legends. His works bear witness to his imagination and technical skills, inviting us to be transported into his imaginative world. It is not only images that we contemplate, but stories that are told, and we have the privilege to experience them through the splendor of his paintings.
